Resting at the Lord’s Feet

Today I have had a check list with an endless stream of tasks that in my head I must get done. I once had a woman tell me when I was in Africa, “For you Americans it is all about the tasks you get checked off your checklist you have, you guys value the tasks, here we are arrive late sometimes because we ran into someone and stopped to have a conversation with them, here the relationships are most important.”

Although I do think it is important to be responsible and love the feeling of achieving a goal or even just checking off the task from my list, I fall into this trap too often. Today we had traditions service at my church it is when we get together in the evening and sing several hymns and listen to some scripture. I love going to this. I almost didn’t go tonight because my flesh was telling me I have so much I needed to do. I almost let something so precious as spending time with the Lord be stolen from me by my own ego in the desire to see my today’s to do list completed. Even if the list was completed, their would be another list of tasks that should be completed tomorrow.

     Painting: Acrylic on canvas

A few years ago I felt the Lord say to me, just come and rest at my feet.

This painting is inspired by the story of Martha and Mary in Luke chapter 10

“Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.””

There is no sweeter place to be than at the feet of Jesus listening to His every life giving word.

Our pastor has given some very good sermons on finding our rest and spiritual nourishment in Jesus lately I will try to link them below.
